A short visit to Charlottesville this week turned into an unexpected source of inspiration. Under a quiet layer of snow, I walked through the historic grounds of the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson and still one of the most beautifully choreographed academic environments in the country.

Design Inspiration from a Snowy Visit to the University of Virginia

I made my way to the Rotunda, which originally served as the university’s library and remains a symbol of learning and civic purpose. What’s interesting is when you stand at the center of the main room a subtle design moment is revealed. From the center the bookcases completely disappear, creating a sense of perfect symmetry and calm. But if you take just a few steps forward and they reappear. Its a simple, brilliant reminder of how architecture shapes perception and invites us to move through space with intention.

I also visited the new Contemplative Commons, a contemporary building that blends seamlessly with UVA’s existing classical design. This walk served as a beautiful reminder that thoughtful design can span centuries and can shape how we experience the world.
