We recently worked with female-led business, Pittsburgh Veterinary Dermatology, to redesign their veterinary dermatology clinic. Our goal was to create a space where pets, their owners, and veterinary professionals could feel calm and at ease. By implementing a “no fear” design philosophy, we focused on reducing stress and promoting a soothing environment for everyone involved.
Here are some key design considerations we implemented to achieve a calming and functional space:
We considered pet-friendly features, like:
- Separate Areas: We created distinct spaces for dogs, cats, and other animals to reduce anxiety caused by unfamiliar scents or interactions.
- Non-Slip Floors: Our design used materials that prevent slipping to avoid paws slipping and sliding making pets feel secure while walking.
We incorporated calming sensory design elements like:
- Soft Lighting: We avoided harsh lighting, like certain fluorescents.
- Neutral Colors: The color palette focused on calming hues like blues, greens, and soft earth tones for the walls and furnishings.
- Soundproofing: We incorporated acoustic panels to minimize loud noises like barking, crying and equipment sounds.
This thoughtful design approach has transformed the clinic into a stress-reducing space that benefits everyone—from the veterinary team to their four-legged patients. Our client has shared how this new design has made their workday smoother and more enjoyable while creating a positive experience for pets and owners.
